Our Delta Colony has utilized both structured and informal recruitment at the College of Charleston to recruit bold, intelligent, and motivated young men to lead our Colony in future years and solidify our legacy as a fraternity that stands out by living its values.
The Fall formal recruitment process consists of a two week period including a Convocation of potential new members, Open House, IFC recruitment events, and a formal Bid Day ceremony. As a Delta Colony, these two weeks marked our first formal recruitment cycle.
Brothers Stahl and Cruthers
Recruitment events our Colony held during this period attracted solid potential new members and allowed brothers to interact and get to know them in group settings. These events included grilling out at a brother’s home, a night of baseball and burgers at King Street Grille, flag football in Marion Square, and a night of sailing around Charleston Harbor.
We strive to attract and recruit men who pursue excellence in their studies, are actively involved in other student organizations, and have a moral responsibility reflective of our Colony’s values. The five core values, Friendship, Excellence, Morality, Service, and Knowledge, were essential in our evaluation of potential new members. By meeting men at our events and holding meaningful conversations with them, we were able to accomplish something very rare in a formal rush period: by the time our Colony voted on the recruits, a majority of brothers had personally met and gotten to know each of the guys we considered for membership, already firmly establishing Phi Gamma Delta’s core value of a lifetime of friendship.
Brothers at basketball tailgate
Our selectivity in giving out bids transferred into 100% retention and initiation of pledges this semester. The six newly initiated members we gained this past Fall semester have been invaluable additions to our Colony, selflessly giving their time and effort to further our collective goals while upholding the Five Values of Phi Gamma Delta.
Throughout the semester, we have encouraged our brothers to practice 365 Recruitment and have already offered several additional bids to recruits who will pledge in the Spring semester. Along with these outstanding men, the new members we gain in the informal recruitment process in January will further solidify our Colony and help shape it into the chapter we hope to become.
