Philanthropy

The Lambda Chi chapter of Phi Gamma Delta at the College of Charleston stresses active volunteering within our community and providing service to benefit those around us. We aim to improve not only our campus but the Charleston community as well. This year alone, our Brothers have donated 604 hours of their time to local organizations. This averages to 17.25 hours of service per Brother.

Within our chapter, Brothers have dedicated time to improving the quality of life for the local homeless through organizations such as Crisis Ministries and projects like Hotdogs for the Homeless. We have given back to the boroughs surrounding our campus by picking up litter during monthly Neighborhood Sweeps. In the Fall of 2009, our Brothers took active part in painting the outside wing of James Simmons Elementary School. The administrators of the school have been working with our service chair to coordinate  follow-up projects for the Spring.

On campus, we have set an example of service for incoming freshmen from day one. We worked vigorously with Residence Life and Housing along with other organizations to move the Class of 2013 into our campus residence halls.  Additionally, our chapter assisted the Office of Admissions with the College of Charleston’s first annual Accepted Students Day. We acted as guides and leaders to welcome potential students to the school.

Brothers have also been actively volunteering for:

•    Medical University of South Carolina Children’s Hospital

•    College of Charleston’s Jewish Student Union

•    Operation Smile

•    Odyssey Healthcare

•    Campus EMS

Philanthropy

The American Red Cross is our official philanthropy. We are currently in the planning stages of a philanthropic event. We will be inviting Greek and non-Greek organizations of the College of Charleston to compete in the first annual Fiji Beach Olympic Games at Folly Beach.

We will also be hosting blood and donation drives in an effort to assist the Red Cross. Blood is a valuable resource that can save many lives and we strongly urge our Brothers and peers to take part in campus and local blood drives.

In the Spring of 2009, our chapter co-hosted a charity pig roast with Kappa Alpha Theta. The event attracted numerous guests with delicious barbecue from Bessinger’s and great music by local band Bodies Full of Magic. After weeks of careful planning, $1200 was raised for Kappa Alpha Theta’s Philanthropy, CASA, Court Appointed Special Advocates.

Also in the Spring of 2009, our chapter placed first for fraternities in the College’s Greek Week. The week benefited Crisis Ministries and consisted of multiple competitions. Competitions included a donation contest to stock our local shelters and fundraising events which charged for participation or admission. Our chapter donated a carload of food and supplies valued to be at least $200 to Crisis Ministries and had strong showing at all participation-based events.

Dollars pledged to the Children's Miracle Network in 2009 and 2010

Currently, we have a team participating in Dance Marathon to raise money for MUSC Children’s Hospital and the Children’s Miracle Network. Our team of 18 has pledged to raise at least $150 each to reach a total of at least $2700. In 2009, we had 6 Brothers participate in Dance Marathon, raising over $900 as a group.

We have urged our Brothers to support our fellow Greek organizations at the
College of Charleston and have given to or participated in the following events:

  • Zeta Tau Alpha presents “Mr. College of Charleston” *
  • Alpha Delta Pi’s “Pie-a-Pi”
  • Zeta Tau Alpha’s “Soak-a-ZTA”
  • Sigma Phi Epsilon’s Beach Volleyball Tournament
  • Sigma Delta Tau’s “SigDelt Slam” Basketball Tournament
  • Kappa Alpha Theta’s Pig Roast
  • Pi Kappa Phi’s Scaffold Sit

Our Brother’s have reported making donations of $46.63 each on average to philanthropic causes in the South Carolina Low Country.  This brings our semester total for individual donations to an estimated $1632.

*We had Brothers entered as Mr. Phi Gamma Delta and Mr. Student Government Association (SGA). Both Brothers Ethan Chabot and John Capelle made it to the final five, with Brother Capelle winning the pageant as Mr. SGA.
